Connections

Education

Boasting a fantastic choice of educational facilities for all ages, the city has a number of Ofsted "Outstanding" rated schools including: Sunningdale School, Hill View Infant Academy and St Anthony's Girls Catholic Academy among others.  Sunderland City College has numerous sites based at Bede, Park Lane and Washington and they provide a range of courses for school leavers as well as adult courses.  Sunderland University has grown and developed over recent years and were successful in their bid to open a new school of medicine in March 2018.

Local History

There are a few industries that Sunderland became well known for and played a huge part in Sunderland’s history - brewing, coal mining, glass making and shipbuilding, with shipbuilding being the largest industry, lasting over six centuries during which it had over 400 registered shipyards and became the biggest shipbuilding town in the World.  During the 20th Century, Sunderland’s shipbuilding was key to Britain’s efforts in the two World Wars.  Sunderland’s last shipyard eventually closed in 1989.
