Location

Enviably located on the north-east coast, with Seaburn and Roker beaches both on the doorstep and the sought-after Whitburn Village up the road, not to mention plenty of green spaces, it’s the perfect location for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors without losing proximity to some of the region’s best-known towns and cities. It's an affluent, thriving residential area with a strong community feel.

Connections

Public transport is easily accessible within Fulwell, offering bus services to Sunderland Town Centre, Durham and Newcastle. As well as a reliable bus service, a metro station is also accessible and within walking distance from anywhere within Fulwell, the two stations being Seaburn Metro and Stadium of Light.

Shopping and Leisure

Fulwell residents have everything they need close by, including plenty of corner-shops, convenience stores, petrol stations and independent retailers. Locals frequent shops such as Corner 93, which sells an array of preloved vintage clothes, and there are many other great retailers along Sea Road. American Golf is also nearby and is popular with golfing fanatics, thanks to its large stock of golf-related products. There are some excellent local pubs, such as The Bluebell on Fulwell Road, The Grange on Newcastle road both serving up both food and drink. The Mill is another popular choice, and regularly shows live sports events on its big screen for fans to enjoy, so too are the Royal Marine, The Cambridge, The Cliff and the New Derby.

Football is a fond pastime of many locals and The Stadium of Light opened in July 1997 and seats 49,000 spectators, adjacent to the stadium is the Beacon of light which is a sports community and educational facility which was commissioned by the Foundation of Light opening in September 2018. The Aquatic centre is home to an Olympic sized swimming pool and also features gym facilities.

Education

Families will be pleased to know there are some excellent schools in the area too, such as Fulwell Infant and Fulwell Junior School, which was awarded ‘Outstanding’ in its recent Ofsted report. Likewise, St Benet’s Roman Catholic School is also regarded as ‘Outstanding’ and is a popular choice with parents. The National Glass Centre is an important part of Sunderland culture and offers the opportunity for educational visits and exhibitions.

Local History

Before the industrial revolution took hold, Fulwell was a tiny farming village, evidence of which can be seen by its Windmill which still stands today, and two others in nearby Cleadon and Whitburn. In the Victorian era, the area’s population began to grow, as increasing numbers of people started to appreciate its prime location.
